The Power of a Smile: 5 Reasons to Smile on Your Exhibition Stand for Enhanced Engagement and Sales

Jul 03, 2023

Business can be quite cut throat. Competition is fierce and first impressions matter! You want to increase your customer base and what better way than using an exhibition.

When you're manning your exhibition stand, your goal is to engage with potential customers and quickly create trust and credibility in you and your product.

I have seen fancy technology, gadgets and lots of smoke and mirrors yet one of the simplest and often overlooked tool for achieving this is a smile.

You see, a smile has the power to disarm, to create trust, and to establish a non-threatening environment - when it is a warm, genuine smile.

Here are five points to consider when you are on your stand.

Smiles are Disarming and Non-Threatening:

When attendees approach an exhibition stand, they often encounter a barrage of sales pitches and aggressive marketing tactics.

A warm smile, however, can break down those barriers. A smile communicates approachability, making visitors feel comfortable and welcomed. It sets the tone for a non-threatening interaction, allowing potential customers to let their guard down and engage in a genuine conversation.

By creating a relaxed atmosphere, you increase the likelihood of building a positive rapport, fostering trust, and ultimately, closing a sale.

Smiles Establish a Positive First Impression:

In the fast-paced world of exhibitions, first impressions count. When attendees pass by your stand, you only have a few seconds to make a good impression and a genuine smile can be the deciding factor in whether they stop or keep walking.

A genuine smile projects positivity, confidence, and professionalism. It shows that you are enthusiastic about your products or services, which helps pique the curiosity of passersby.

Create that positive first impression. Think about it, you (and your visitors) are more likely to remember someone with a big smile than not.

Smiles Create a Memorable Experience:

Exhibitions are filled with different stands, all vying for attention. The noise, the sounds, it will be overwhelming for your visitor.

To stand out from the noise, you need to create a memorable experience for attendees. Your smile will be part of that experience.

When you genuinely smile at someone, it triggers a reciprocal response, in short - smiles are contagious.

When you smile, and I mean really smile, a full face smile while looking into your visitors eyes, it is very difficult to not smile back. Smiling makes you feel better. Your visitor smiling back will make them feel better too.

These positive emotions become subconsciously associated with your brand and help you be memorable to your visitor. The positive feelings are left as a good experience with your visitor and increase your chances of follow up engagement.

Smiles Enhance Communication and Connection:

On an exhibition stand, you only have seconds to make a connection. That connection is key to getting your visitors open to communication.

Exhibitions are international meeting grounds. A smile is a universal language that transcends barriers and connects people on a deeper level. It is a quick way of establishing empathy - which allows you to find out how best to help your visitor.

When you smile, you invite open dialogue. Combine this with active listening and genuine engagement, this builds trust and credibility, making it easier in future sales conversations.

Smiles Reflect Confidence and Competence:

On your stand you want to show confidence and competence in your products and services . That is what your visitors are looking for in a vendor.

A properly timed confident smile is a simple way to demonstrate both.

A smile will show empathy with their problem and this allows you to talk about how your products and services will help them. You can show your knowledge - and by helping them - you build trust. This will differentiate you from others in the exhibition hall, and your competitors.

Your genuine smile is your not so secret weapon to attracting, welcoming and engaging visitors to your stand.

Your smile is the first steps to creating that memorable experience that will make your follow up (hopefully) easier. A warm smile leaves a good impression and a willingness to engage further down the line.
